The Graduate and Professional Student Government will start taking election nominations for the 2026-2027 academic year in Spring 2026.

We encourage all graduate students, regardless of degree or program, to get involved with GPSG and help build a better community for UNC Charlotte graduate students.

The Elections Act (2021) states that the election of the GPSG President, Vice President, and Treasurer take place each April. All enrolled graduate and professional students at UNC Charlotte are eligible to vote online for their representatives at vote.charlotte.edu during the specified window.

Positions

President

The President shall serve as the chief executive officer of the GPSG. They shall be assigned three (3) to four (4) Graduate Student Organizations (GSOs) to serve as GPSG liaison. The president shall also have the following authorities, powers, and responsibilities:

Section 1: Executive Authorities

The President shall:

  1. Represent the GPSG and serve as the chief advocate for the graduate and professional student body of UNC Charlotte to the University’s administrative, facultative, and external entities.
  2. Speak and act on behalf of the organization, in a manner consistent with the Constitution and these By-Laws
  3. Appoint graduate and professional students to vacancies within University committees, subject to any advice and consent requirements outlined in these By-Laws

Section 2: Legislative and Internal Management

The President shall:

  1. Compile and distribute the agenda for all Senate meetings
  2. Assist other members of the Leadership Team in leading Senate meetings through a rotating, team-driven format in which each member has dedicated time to present updates and engage with Graduate Student Organization representatives. The president should never be the sole person responsible for leading senate meetings.
  3. Establish the annual schedule for Leadership Team meetings
  4. Appoint members to the Leadership Team, subject to confirmation procedures outlined in these By-Laws
  5. Initiate and oversee all business and programs necessary to fulfill and advance the purposes of this organization

Section 3: University Relations:

The President shall:

  1. Maintain regular meetings with key University officials, including but not limited to the Chancellor, Provost, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dean of Students, Dean and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, and the GPSG Advisor.
  2. Represent the graduate student body at the Chancellor’s Leadership Team meetings.
  3. Represent the GPSG at all official University functions, including commencement ceremonies.
  4. The President may designate a member of the Leadership Team to represent the organization at recurring administrative meetings. 

Section 4: Knowledge Management and Transition:

The President shall contribute to the official organizational record (e.g., Learning Journal, Wins Document) a minimum of two entries per month to ensure effective training and knowledge transfer during the annual Leadership Transition.

 

Vice President

The Vice President shall support the president and assume the duties of the President in their absence or incapacity. They shall be assigned three (3) to four (4) Graduate Student Organizations (GSOs) to serve as GPSG liaison. The specific duties of the Vice President shall include:

Section 1: Succession and Authority

The Vice President shall:

  1. Assume the duties and responsibilities of the President in the event of the President’s temporary incapacity, absence, or permanent departure from office.
  2. Succeed to the office of the President should it become permanently vacant, in accordance with the succession procedures outlined in this document. 

Section 2: Committee Oversight

The Vice President shall:

  1. Serve as chair of the Committee for the Graduate Research Symposium
  2. Serve as an ex-officio, non-voting member of the Finance Committee

Section 3: Communications and Public Relations

The Vice President shall:

  1. Supervise all matters of public relations and external communications for the GPSG.
  2. Be responsible for promoting the organization and its activities, which includes, but is not limited to, liaising with media outlets, chairing focus groups, and planning special events.

Section 4: Knowledge Management and Transition

The Vice President shall contribute to the official organizational record (e.g., Learning Journal, Wins Document) to support training and knowledge transfer for the position’s successor during the annual Leadership Transition.

 

Treasurer

The Treasurer shall serve as the chief financial officer of the GPSG. They shall be assigned three (3) to four (4) Graduate Student Organizations (GSOs) to serve as GPSG liaison. They shall have the following duties and responsibilities:

Section 1: Financial Representation and Oversight

The Treasurer shall:

  1. Serve as the primary representative of the GPSG to the Student Activities Fees Commission (SAFC).
  2. Chair the GPSG Finance Committee.
  3. Oversee the development, management, and execution of the annual budget.
  4. Requisition and allocate funds in accordance with the approved annual budget and all governing regulations.

Section 2: Fiscal Management and Compliance

The Treasurer shall:

  1. Maintain and safeguard all financial records of the organization.
  2. Ensure all financial activities and procedures are conducted in strict compliance with the GPSG Treasury Laws, the SAFC statutes, and all other applicable University policies.

Section 3: Knowledge Management and Transition:

The Treasurer shall contribute to the official organizational record (e.g., Learning journal, Wins Document) to support training and knowledge transfer for the position’s successor during the annual Leadership Transition.
