Darek McCullers (PENDING)
1) Where did you graduate from high school?
William G. Enloe High School in Raleigh, NC.
2) Where did you graduate from college?
I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Mount Olive, Masters in Theology and Doctorate in Ministry at Hood Theological Seminary and currently finishing my PhD Dissertation at Antioch University.
3) What are your current UNC Charlotte academic majors?
Graduate Certificate in Philosophy program, taking courses focused on Philosophy and Race.
4) Which GPSG goal are you most excited to help accomplish this year—and why?
Increase and maintain 95% usage of the Niner Engage platform among the 37 graduate student organizations. It was through Niner Engage that I found out about numerous organizations at UNCC. It is a robust platform, but I noticed that many student organizations are not using it, as it should be used, with up to date information and current/upcoming events. I would like to see that usage improve, raising the level of student involvement on campus.
5) What is one thing in your bag/backpack right now that you probably shouldn’t admit to carrying around?
A Capri Sun, for that emergency burst of thirst that’s been in there for years!
6) If you had to write your thesis/dissertation as a Netflix show, what would it be called?
Above and Behind the Veil: Explorations of Black Race Consciousness in America.
7) What is one important thing every graduate student at UNC Charlotte should know?
They must know how to “gut” their readings. Often times reading requirements are to copious to read word for word!
8) What’s your go-to response when grad school gets overwhelming?
Spend a day watching sports (football or basketball) as a diversion and release before getting back in the grind again.
9) What’s one thing you wish someone had told you before starting grad school at UNC Charlotte?
Nothing. At this point, I’m a grad school pro! Lol!
10) If your personality were the result of two famous people combining their traits, who would they be—and why?
I’ll take a quote from the movie Boys in the Hood. I would describe myself as a Malcolm, Martin, Farakhan, and what not.
11) Dream Job?
Pastor and Professor of Africana Studies (I know that’s 2 jobs).
